ระหว่างการขึ้น Panel

WMS : Game Changer for Your Library

Introduce yourself and your library
คำตอบ :  My name is Supaporn Chaithammapakorn.  I have been working at Huachiew University (HCU) library as a library director for  3 years. I worked for  18 years  at Chulalongkorn University Library as a Cataloging Librarian and another 8 years at National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) as a researcher in metadata. Presently, I serve Huachiew Chalermprakiet University Library as Central Library’s director where the area of Health Sciences and Chinese Studies are very prominent.  Established in July 1992, the library holds 320,000 volumes, providing services to more than 8,000 students, 494 faculty members and 400 staffs

คำถาม :  Why did you choose to move to WMS?
คำตอบ :
A few years ago, with some challenges to best serve our patrons we analyzed all our library needs. We finally found that our existing ILS required to change to a new LSP solution which would meet our future requirements and limitation where the library would be faced up with the lack of staffs and budget.  At first, we didn’t set up any high expectation of our new library system; however, WMS as a cloud system can do beyond and eventually exceeds our expectation. With a cloud technology and sharing concept of WMS, our users can access so many resources which we do not own so far. Our users benefit from the data contributions of participants, I mean, from shared Machines-Readable Catalog (MARC) records, to a shared online public access catalog (OPAC), where searches from all participating libraries enhance the relevancy ranking of results. Moreover, With a long establishment of OCLC in research and development of library, as a result WMS developed by OCLC has been considered as our best choice to meet almost all our objectives during that time.

คำถามWhat impact did it have?
คำตอบ :  Since we have been upped our WMS on November last year, we received many changes as the following:
Our library staffs: They all need to be more active since WMS is totally different from our previous system.  Because of sophisticated system, it took some time for our staff to learn WMS.  Finally, it was gone by Knowledge Management activity which our team did together. You can visit at  (https://lib-km.hcu.ac.th/) .
End-users/students: The positive feedback are mostly received from the users since they can access unlimited resources not only from our library, but also from other library all over the world. However, the users still need to get accustomed to the single search which we currently try to come up with the project to encourage the students to use library services more.
Lecturers/faculty member: We hear mostly positive responses from them as well because of the unlimited access the resources not only from our library but also from other library around the world which benefit to the lecturers and researchers for their information searching, research work and citation.
Management:  The library can save lots of their budget since some of the resources can be borrowed from other libraries through WorldShareILL

คำถาม : What feedback did you receive?
คำตอบ
: The feedback received from our staffs and patrons on WMS is very positive.   The key success of using WMS is budget saving.   Sharing everything as a concept of WMS such as resources, data and cataloging indeed helps reducing budget and time very substantially.  It’s also noticeable WMS system help improving our staff’s skill and knowledge significantly.  Everyone seems eager to learn and enjoy using WMS daily.  Our staffs usually share their experiences and knowledge of using WMS through Huachiew Library’s Knowledge Management Blog (https://lib-km.hcu.ac.th/). Furthermore, we also can share and suggest the idea of new enhancement to OCLC community center.

คำถาม : Did it allow you to do other projects because your staff had more time to focus on other activities?
คำตอบ:
WMS really simplifies our workflow and enables us to use the information and data from the reports generated from WMS in decision making more precisely.  For examples, we start using Not Loan Return function in WMS instead of manually in putting the non loan return count in Excel.

คำถาม: If you move to WMS to solve a particular problem, did it allow you to reach your goals?
คำตอบ :
It did reach our expectation and beyond. One more thing worth mentioning is WorldCat Discovery, a powerful OPAC integrated with Single Search solution which interests our library many years.
In addition, plenty of WMS features give a better solution in terms of working process comparing to the old ILS system offering. We all agree that WMS is a fascinating library system with so many things to discover and learn

คำถาม: How have you engaged with the WMS Community so far?
คำตอบ : In Thailand, The WorldShareILL conferences are regularly held among the ILL library members to seek more collaboration which we try to participate every time.  This helps building a strong relationship and collaboration between the ILL libraries and makes us feel like we belong in the community. As a part of the university, we’re very proud to promote our local collections to be displayed and seen by every library members worldwide through WorldCat. This enable the worldwide library members and academic professionals recognize our library as well as university. The reputation of university supposed to be a first priority metric which QS evaluate the University for ranking.  We get to borrow items from other libraries and also lend items to the other libraries around the world. In the meantime, we start our plans to share the experience as the first WMS subscriber in Thailand through online articles. So that the Other Thai librarians will have a better understanding of LSP library system.

คำถาม: Specific items to your library you would like to share
คำตอบ:
We’re very pleased to know that OCLC commit  to support Thai characters and language as a first priority. Should Thai searching capability fully works in WMS, we believe that WMS will be a perfect library system ever available in Thailand.

We have been trying to create Thai Authority Name Records in WMS through NACO program. We have received the Code and are waiting for the response from NACO about the next training session. Our next goal is to gain the cooperation from National Library of Thailand in bringing Thai subject headings into WMS.
